We have over three acres of beautiful outdoor space, five private historic suites, and gardens that will be the perfect backdrop for your special day. Our Elizabeth Lane Garden was designed by noted landscape designer, Jenks Farmer, to be a modern, southern garden with color year-round. Her father was David Hutchison; the family lived on a plantation along the Catawba River. David Hutchison was one of the earliest white settlers to move onto Catawba Indian land.

This crisis in Ann White’s life revealed a woman with an uncommon resolve and a keen sense for business. However, for several years after George’s death, Ann struggled to make ends meet and support her family. She continued the railroad construction project, took in boarders, and farmed on a small scale. One of her boarders was Frederick Nims, the chief engineer for the railroad. Nims not only paid rent but also hired one of Ann’s slaves, Charles to work with him, paying $35.00 a month to Ann and providing Charles’ clothing and shoes.

George Pendleton White was very supportive of bringing the proposed Charlotte to Columbia rail line through Rock Hill. On October 10, 1848, he was issued a contract by the Charlotte and South Carolina Railroad Company. Construction of the annex began around 1869 and was finished around 1871.

Andrew married a young music teacher, Hattie Isabella Lindsay, who had come to Rock Hill from York. They also lived in the White Home and helped care for Ann, as she was beginning to experience declining health. In 1880, Ann Hutchison White, the “Mother of Rock Hill,” passed away. With the completion of the railroad, a depot was established at the edge of Ann White’s land. Called by some Ebenezer Depot, the name soon became Rock Hill, and a new community was born. Her neighbor, Alexander T. Black, had a plat made by John Roddey, local surveyor, and created a Main Street with lots for sale.

When he saw the symbol of his brotherhood, he gave the command to retreat, and the family were saved. In response to the petition from some local residents asking for incorporation, several prominent residents sent a counter-petition against incorporation. Seven people, who owned 4/5th of the land that would become Rock Hill, gave several reasons for opposing incorporation. The land was covered by a pine grove, leading many locals to refer to the school as the Pine Grove Academy instead of by its official name. The school was located approximately 250 yards northeast of the White Home and a half mile from the railroad depot. In 1856, the Pine Grove Academy for girls was opened as well.

We toured this venue with Matt, who coordinates all the weddings done there. He advertises being able to make an all inclusive option for your wedding so at the end of the tour we asked about pricing for everything he offers. He said he does not share pricing with couples until after they make the $1,000 deposit to book the venue. When pressed on the subject the only information he gave was that his packages usually start around 10k, that's on top of the 3k to rent the venue. Every other venue we have spoken with is very transparent about pricing, so he seemed very sketchy and unprofessional.

Both the Whites and the Hutchisons had been strong supporters of America’s fight for independence. Ann’s grandfather, Alexander, was killed at the battle of Hanging Rock during the American Revolution. Patriots in George’s family included his cousin, Andrew Jackson. Again, when confronted, Matt was argumentative and would not take accountability for missing this important detail. In the end, many of my vendors would most likely not work with him again due to his attitude, and several guests told me that he was incredibly rude and unwelcoming. While I had an amazing time at my wedding, the planning period and post-wedding experience have been an absolute nightmare. We worked with Matt Starnes, who over-promised and under-delivered. During our first meeting, Matt assured us he would handle everything, including coordinating with vendors for us - he didn't.

H. White, along with his brother Beatty Jennings White, an attorney, sold much of the remaining farmland for residential development for the growing city. Following a tornado in 1926 which created a great deal of damage in downtown Rock Hill and destroyed many trees at the White Home, H. H. White extensively replanted the grounds. The beautiful live oak trees were probably planted at this time.

This was one of the highest points along the line, and the removal of a flint rock hill in the area would later provide the name for the new community of Rock Hill. Unfortunately, during his work supervising the grading, George caught pneumonia and died in 1849, leaving Ann with a farm to run and four small children. As the was neared its end, the family worked to care for each other. In March 1865, James was encamped in Northern Virginia and was receiving regular “care packages” from Ann. He wrote and urged her to redirect her gifts to the numerous needy in South Carolina. Daughter Ada was sent to several female colleges during the war to keep her safe. James wrote to his brother Andrew urging him to protect the family and home from dangerous Confederate scavengers. James would lay down his rifle at a little known spot called Appomattox Court House and return home.

George Pendleton White was the first owner of the White Home, which is named after his family. He died on February 25, 1849, of pneumonia which he caught while supervising his building crew that was working on preparing for a new railroad line. The White Home began as a one-room cottage, which is believed to have been built shortly before the White's obtained the property. There is a separate log cabin behind the house which was later used as a kitchen for the boarding house but does predate the property by a number of years.
